Family Resource Center to Help Parents Understand Children with the Summer Parenting Program | Local

The Gordon County Family Resource Center is now running its Parenting with a Purpose summer program.

The program is an effort to help parents in the local community develop stimulating parenting skills as an alternative to abusive and neglectful parenting and child rearing.

According to Georgia Family Connection data collected in 2019, 85 out of 1,000 children in Gordon County have experienced documented incidents of neglect and abuse. The same data revealed that 50 per 1,000 children living in the county had experienced incidents of child abuse and 41 per 1,000 children had experienced incidents of neglect.

The Family Resource Center tries to reduce those numbers throughout the year through programs like the one it currently runs: trauma-informed initiatives designed to help parents find places where they can better serve their families. children with compassion and understanding.

“Anyone can join us and take the course, said program supervisor Wendy Shedd. “It’s free, and I think it’s one of those things that anyone could benefit from. Being a parent can be very difficult, so these resources make a big difference.

This year’s summer parenting program includes classes in topics such as responsibility and discipline, cooperation and communication, and building courage and self-esteem. Other classes help parents learn to understand and cope with their child’s feelings, as well as develop family morals, values and rules.

“We want people to leave these classes knowing how to talk to their kids and make rules for the house without alienating them and without the conversation escalating beyond that: a conversation, Shedd said.

The next session, Monday June 28, will focus solely on Cooperation and Communication. The schedule and courses for the rest of the program are as follows:

♦ Monday July 12 – Responsibility and discipline

♦ Monday July 19 – Communicate with respect

♦ Monday July 26 – Build courage and self-esteem

♦ Monday August 2 – Understanding feelings, dealing with stress and anger

♦ Monday August 9 – Understand and develop morals, values and family rules
