CV NEWS FEED // Men of Christ Madison, a Wisconsin-based group of Catholic men, began placing men overnight at their local crisis pregnancy center to ward off vandals amid a wave of nationwide attacks on pro-life clinics.
“Various radical groups, in reaction to the recent overturning by the United States Supreme Court of the infamous 1973 Roe v. Wade…threat churches and organizations that provide direct assistance to women with pregnancies in distress” , Men of Christ Madison President Dave Yanke wrote in an email to members.
“Now that unrestricted abortion across the country has been canceled, crisis pregnancy centers have become a target,” Yanke told CatholicVote. “The Women’s Care Center, located directly across from Planned Parenthood…is an obvious potential target.”
One of the first pro-life organizations to be attacked after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn deer leaked in early May was Wisconsin Family Action, located in downtown Madison. On May 8, felons set fire to the group’s property, leaving behind the words “If abortions aren’t safe, then neither are you” scrawled in graffiti.
Men of Christ is an organization of Catholic men whose mission is to equip men with the skills and confidence to become better Catholics and better followers of the Faith, according to its website.
Yanke helps organize a group of 60 Men of Christ, each pledging to stay “inside the care center overnight to deter vandalism and sabotage” once a month. The men take turns to guard the center in pairs.
“The guys on my team are really taking this seriously,” Yanke told CatholicVote:
They said there were monitors from cameras pointing outwards. While one sleeps, the other watches the monitors. There have been times when cars have come into the parking lot and the guys have to make a quick decision on what to do… Keep watching, call the police or turn the lights on and off and look out the window to do their presence. known.
“So far,” Yanke says, “there has been no incident. And that’s exactly what we want.”
Yanke also lamented the lack of response from law enforcement — from the Justice Department down — as attacks on pro-life venues continue to escalate.
“Unfortunately, they’re not getting the protection they should under the law,” Yanke said.
He added that he could not make this effort without a team of men ready to rise to the occasion and protect women and children:
Fortunately, the board members and men of Men of Christ Madison intervene. They work to help cover night shifts at the Women’s Care Center to be the eyes and ears protecting the resources available to women in pregnancy crisis who have been threatened by many pro-abortion radicals.
While political leaders like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, have refused to condemn the violence (and some, including Senator Liz Warren, D-MA, have even come under scrutiny for adding fuel to the fire with inflammatory rhetoric against clinical pro-lifers), community leaders like Dave Yanke of Men of Christ Madison are undeterred.
